In Rexburg, Idaho, where I grew up, there is an small grocery store with an ice cream and sandwich shop. It is called G’s Dairy Delights and they have really yummy ice cream. One of my favorite flavors is called Gorilla Munch. It is banana flavored ice cream with peanut butter swirls and Oreo chunks. I recreated this recipe and it turned out pretty good.
Ingredients:
- 1 1/4 C. milk
- 4 egg yolks
- 1/4 C. white sugar
- 1/4 C. brown sugar
- 1-1/4 C of heavy cream
- 2 large over-ripe bananas
- 1/2 tsp. of vanilla
- peanut butter to taste
- 1 C. crushed Oreos (or as many as you want)
Directions:
- Whisk together the egg yolks in a medium bowl and set aside
- In a medium pot, over medium heat, heat the milk and sugar until it begins bubble a little bit and the sugar dissolves.
- Slowly pour about half of the milk into the egg yolk mixture while stirring. Mix well. Pour everything back into the pot with the rest of the warm milk. Keep stirring.
- Reheat until it begins to bubble, but do not let it boil.
- Remove from heat and pour into a bowl. Add heavy cream. Stir. Add pureed bananas and vanilla. Stir.
- Cover and put in the freezer until it starts to freeze around the edges of the bowl. Mix again and freeze in the ice cream maker. At the end of the churning, add a few scoops of peanut butter and about a cup of crushed up Oreos.
