This cake brings back so many memories for me. It is originally called Texas Sheet Cake, but to me it is called Farm Cake. My Grandma Jo and Grandpa Dave own some land in the mountains that we would always visit to camp or cook dinner over the fire pit. My grandma would always bring a big cookie sheet of this wonderful, moist chocolate cake. Hence, the name Farm Cake. I am not sure if this is the exact recipe that my grandma used, but it tastes exactly the same.
Top it with the Chocolate-Buttermilk Frosting found in the last post.
Ingredients:
- 2 C. all-purpose flour
- 2 C. sugar
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1 C. butter
- 1/3 C. unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 C. water
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 C. buttermilk
- 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1 recipe chocolate buttermilk frosting
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease a 15x10x1 inch or a 13x9x2 inch baking pan; set aside. In a medium bowl, stir together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
- In a medium sauce pan combine butter, cocoa powder, and 1 C. of water. Bring mixture, just to boiling, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Add the cocoa mixture to flour mixture and beat with an electric mixer until thoroughly combined.
- Add eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla. Beat for 1 minute (batter will be thin). Pour batter into the prepared pan.
- Bake about 25 minutes for the larger pan and about 35 minutes for the smaller pan. Or just until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.
- Pour warm Chocolate-Buttermilk frosting over the cake, spreading evenly. Cool in pan for about an hour.
Be careful. This cake is highly addictive!
